If you follow me on Instagram, you already have seen lots of process pictures of our next calendar, "12 Praise Verses". But as it is the nature of Instagram, you only get tiny glimpses of what goes on behind the scenes here in my studio, so I thought I'd take you back and walk you through my process a little! Consider it a personal tour ;)
This truly is the most meaningful project I've come up with yet. And I never knew I would love painting landscapes this much until now. There's always something new in this line of work, something new I learn about myself, my gift, and how God can use this gift. It's a journey, and an adventure.
"Mightier than the thunders of many waters. Mightier than the waves of the sea, the Lord on high is mighty!"
- Psalm 93:4
It was just as I had imagined it when I put the very first piece together, this magnificent landscape with an even more magnificent passage. Picture meets words. Oh yes. Powerful, indeed. God gave us Romans 1:19-20 for a reason, and I am reminded of it every time I paint nature.
"For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, has been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made..." Romans 1:19-20
Nature! It is the most obvious thumbprint of our Maker, and you'd have to be blind to miss it.
Onto the process.
1. I use tracing paper so I can compose the words in context of the painting.
2. I copy what is on the tracing paper onto watercolor paper in pencil, then watercolor.
3. I scan everything.
4. In Photoshop, I convert all lettering from black to white, and layer it on top of the painting.
I repeat the same steps for all of them, and right now I am about halfway done!
"The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation..."
- 2 Samuel 22:2a
Before I started painting, I did spend weeks brainstorming and researching all the passages in the Bible that specifically praise God, hence the name, "12 Praise Verses". I collected the passages that focused on Him rather than man. Some of them were repetitive, and some were way too long. Narrowing them down to just 12 was a long process. But in the end, I'm always so thankful Scripture is what I get to work with—it's the best resource ever.
"God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our LORD."
- 1 Corinthians 1:9
And here's my work space! As much as I hate glare on my screen, I just love all the sun that flows through the windows. Having worked in offices with no windows or natural light, I know this is a luxury. Can't take anything for granted, right?
I will be doing at least one more post on my process for "12 Praise Verses", so stay tuned. And of course, I CANNOT wait to do a shoot of our new mugs so you can meet them! Exciting things are brewing here, my friends.
And here's to 70 degrees weather. x
