What is Christmas really about?
"Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned...
But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ." Romans 5:12-17
This passage is not the easiest to read through, but it explains why Jesus came into the world. Adam was the first man to sin, which the following generations would inherit, then came Jesus our Messiah, to save all mankind from sin. How? By living a perfectly righteous and obedient life as 100% man and 100% God on our behalf, that we would inherit that righteousness before God the Father through faith alone. Nothing else can save us from our sinful nature that leads to condemnation except Jesus' righteousness and God's grace. And this is a "free gift"!
Jesus came into the world to save us. So the joy of Christmas is for those who believe, for those who have faith in this Messiah who is the ONLY way to eternal life. Christians have such an assured hope (not blind hope) in the Gospel of Jesus—this is what we celebrate in this beautiful season! We celebrate Jesus' birth, his life and death and resurrection, and the eternal life that we will have after this short one.
So we rejoice wholeheartedly, give thanks wholeheartedly. We can live with a clear purpose and with a clear goal, we are not searching or lost. And if you are reading this and you do not know Jesus, my prayer is that through Jesus, you will know this joy that I know and live with the kind of peace this world cannot give. We do not deserve it, but God offers this path to all.
My friends, this is what Christmas is all about.
"I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day."
