"God please please please give me knowledge and wisdom so I can understand what I'm reading!"
I remember praying that as a freshman in college, when I first started reading the Bible on my own. I didn't know what the heck I was reading and the words were so small and the pages seemed blurry. I would pick it up to read and put it back down in ten minutes. I would push myself to read for thirty minutes and I had read one tiny paragraph. It's not easy. It's incredibly difficult in fact, and to give up there is right where Satan wants us. So I prayed and prayed, because I had the desire to learn about God but my body couldn't follow. God answered my prayer promptly. Four years later, I had read from cover to cover twice, and I was a different person. I was a Christian.
One that has no interest in Scripture and proper interpretation cannot be a Christian. That person will not understand who God is or how a Christian ought to live. That person needs to be reached out to, because that person does not know love.
There is a popular saying that you and I have heard before: I would rather choose love than good theology. This breaks my heart. Without good theology, without knowing who God is, there is no love! We are not called to strive for one or the other, we are to have both. Scripture is sufficient to equip us for "every good work."—It teaches us how to live, and it has perfect authority because it is God speaking.
"All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work." 2 Timothy 3:16-17
"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him."
How often do you read Scripture? How often do you meditate on what you read? How often do you pray for understanding and wisdom? If your Bible is collecting dust or is still new even though you bought it years ago, I want to encourage you to pray for the desire and understanding. Through God's Word your life will not be the same, everything will make sense, and you will know true peace. You will understand why you are loved and why you need to love. You will truly comprehend why life is worth living and what will come afterwards.
